Tiny DC generator fixed permanent magnet |
DESCRIPTION:Dungeon Studios Tiny DC generators are made from stepper motors instead of permanent magnet DC motors. They feature a small footprint using a small stepper motor (stepping motor) with a 2 Phase rectifier, One large filtering cap and an outlet with a plug. This stepper motor generates power by seperating the two fields and then running them though a 2 phase bridge rectifier. This rectifier is simular to a 3 phase rectifier with the absence of one of the legs. The signal that you get from a permanent DC motor is noisy and inconstant in it's output. Sure, when you use a Volt meter to measure the out put voltage of a DC motor you get a voltage reading. The problem with that reading is that it's an average of the noise. There could be a 12V spike but there can also be a negative 5V spike that averages out that 12V spike. |
Vertion one: Vertion two: |
When using a stepper motor you get consistent pulses that alternate from negative to positive in equal amounts of voltage. This gives you a much cleaner signal and a more consistent duty cycle. |
One added bonus is that stepper motors have more than one coil, unlike DC motors that have only one coil (negative and Positive winding) This allows you to have two phases of power at once! Once rectified with a 2 Phase rectifier you get a nice positive DC pulse that is ready to be filtered by a large Capacitor. |
Every time you break the magnetic field the generator produces 1 to 3VDC. When you attach a capacitor to the output the capacitor quickly charges to 12VDC or more. This generator will work great with a battery trickle charger or build a yard full of tiny DC generators and power your whole house! |
Some Background: Dungeon Studios came up with this design to fix the problem of using fixed magnet motors as power generators since the power output from a fixed or permanent magnet motor can be weak or noisiey. Using a rewired stepper motor you can generate a small sine wave (looking) output that can be easyly rectified into a DC output. |
